Every cosmetic procedure carries their own myths. Here we address the ones found with lip filler treatments, also known as lip augmentation.

“People will know I have had lip fillers”

It’s easy to search “celebrity lip fillers” and be bombarded with an array of over-injected stars. Enough to want to make you stay away from a needle. The truth behind the pictures is that dermal fillers can look natural (some people just prefer it not to). With ease, a trained medical practitioner can give a subtle hint of volume and shape to your lips, producing the desired outcome.

We advise you to have an understanding of what you want to achieve from the treatment. Listen to your practitioners advice (they do know best after all!).

Most importantly, work with the face you have. There is no point turning up to an appointment thinking you will be coming out as Angelina Jolie. You will come out as you just with better lips!

“A foreign substance is being injected into my face”

This is not the case. There are many brands out there used for dermal fillers, all promising to give a fuller look. Look for the brands containing Hyaluronic Acid. A natural substance found in our bodies. The injections containing this simply reintroduce it into our bodies. This stimulates our natural hyaluronic acid to work hard in providing a fuller, plumper look.

At Cosmetic Courses we work with Juvederm. A leader in the dermal filler market. Their fillers contain no unnatural substances, just a big old dose of a synthetic version of our bodies own hyaluronic acid.

“Only people with thin lips get fillers”

The most common use for lip fillers is to plump out thinner lips. Although they can do much more than that. Fillers can contour your mouth, define a cupids bow, hydrate dry lips & add symmetry to your face. The possibilities are endless…

“I’m too young/old for fillers”

Fillers are known for the anti-ageing qualities. The hyaluronic acid triggers collagen in the skin to rejuvenate the chosen areas. As well as this it’s also enhancing the area, adding volume.

Many celebrities of all ages use fillers as part of their beauty regime. From Jennifer Aniston preventing ageing to the infamous Kylie Jenner lips.

“My lips will feel strange afterwards”

Another popular lip filler myth. Apart from the swelling after your treatment (which can last up to a day). Your lips will feel back to normal. Some patients even forget they have had their lips done unless they look in a mirror!

“When the filler wears off will my lips be even smaller than before?”

Filler top ups can be done after the previous treatment has dissolved. You can stop having lip fillers completely without any side effects. Your lips will return to their natural size, they won’t be smaller than when you first started having treatment. The hyaluronic acid introduced by the injection will dissolve slowly over time leaving you with your natural lips.

“Lip fillers are irreversible”

As long as you have hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, the effects will not be permanent. As discussed above, your body naturally breaks down the filler over time. Along with this, if you are unhappy with your results there is always the possibility to instantly dissolve the filler using a substance called Hyalase. This is almost always unnecessary but gives you the peace of mind that there is an option to reverse the filler if required.

Question :

Dear Cosmetic Courses,

I did the basic course with you a while ago and wondered if you can give me some advice please.

I saw a patient recently who received Evolance in her lips a year ago from another clinic. She now has hard lumps in her lips (collagen I presume).

She asked me to add volume to her lips again and I’m not sure whether it is a good idea!

From my understanding, Juvederm will not cause further lumps, but I would appreciate your opinion.

Answer :

Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately Evolance, unlike Haluronic acid fillers, cannot not be dissolved and will absorb over time.

Overall we would advise the patient to let the Evolance absorb before injecting Juvederm.

It would be possible to inject into the areas without the lumps to improve the appearance but this would not be guaranteed to improve it and could make the situation worse.

Overall we would leave her alone if possible.

Good luck!

When patients are looking for wrinkle and age spot reduction, they often look at fractional laser resurfacing and other skin invasive skin tightening techniques. Facial fillers, or dermal fillers, can often replace laser and surgical treatments. A variety of facial fillers are now available, and patients should speak with a qualified dermatologist or physician about which is best for them.

Dr. Tahl Humes is the owner and medical director of VITAHL Medical Aesthetics in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Humes, who performes both surgical procedures and facial fillers, says that she prefers Juvederm because her patients have less swelling and bruising than with other varieties. Juvederm is a smooth gel non-animal dermal filler with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid available. Dr. Humes says that she prefers Juvederm, but uses Restylane on a rare occasion as well.

As the body ages, it’s normal to see a decrease in the volume appearance of the cheeks because of either fat loss in the face or because of reabsorbtion of bone. This often causes a hollow appearance in the cheeks. Dr. Humes prefers Radiesse or Sculptra for this larger area because these products are better for larger areas. Radiesse and Sculptra are both non-hyaluronic acid based fillers used in recontouring the face. To get the most out of facial fillers, patients often combine large area treatments with individual line treatements.

Dr. Humes recommends Sculptra treatments to her patients who want to keep their filler treatments under wraps. Sculptra treatments done over a period of three months offer a more gradual change. As a bonus, Sculptra stimulates natural collagen slowly and helps to keep a more natural look. With this type of treatment, others won’t quickly notice that the patient has had treatments.

With the many options available with fillers, doctors are now able to meet the needs of almost every patient. Facial fillers are a temporary solutions, though. Some may only last six months while others may last as long as two years. Patients interested in facial contouring, resurfacing, or lifting should speak with their doctor about facial fillers to see if this choice is right for them.

The cosmetic enhancement industry has seen rapid growth over the past ten years. The sheer number of images that we are exposed to of people receiving treatment to fight the effects of aging is staggering. You see them in movies, television, and magazines. As a matter of fact, a study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons predicts that the number of cosmetic procedures undergone each year will have grown by an amazing four hundred percent between 2005 and 2015. A large part of the reason for this is that injections have been replacing more invasive surgical procedures such as face lifts. Injections are both less expensive and offer almost no downtime in comparison to surgical procedures, making them a very attractive option.

Recently, a panel discussion on the future of cosmetic enhancements was held in Toronto, where many of the city’s most respected plastic surgeons, cosmetologists, and dermatologists met to discuss some of the latest changes and the future of the industry. Dr. Sheetal Sapra, director of dermatology at the Institute of Cosmetic and Laser surgery says that back in 1990, nearly all of the cosmetic work that was conducted in Canada was performed by plastic surgeons. This has changed quite drastically. Now only about twenty percent of the work that they do is surgical in nature.

The reason for this change is something called combination therapy. Combination therapy is the use of several different facial injections in combination with one another to receive the desired cosmetic effects. Some of the treatments that may be undergone include Botox, which is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscles of the face, causing them to relax and allowing wrinkles and creases in the face to smooth out. Other treatments such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane contain within them synthetic fillers that help to rejuvinate a sculpt the skin. These fillers include hyaluronic acid and collagen, which are natural proteins produced by the body that help keep tissue healthy. They may also include artificial chemicals that help give form to the face. Other treatments include laser treatments which can be used in order to remove brown spots or rosacea from the face. Fractional tightening is another option which can be used in order to smooth wrinkles and creases, improve the texture of the skin, and fight acne scars.

Dr. Stephen Mulholland, one of Canada’s most respected plastic surgeons, claims that about sixty minutes of work and three thousand dollars is enough to take five years off of somebody’s face today.

If you have tried more wrinkle cream and treatments than you have wrinkles on your face, it is easy to get frustrated with a lack of results. Some creams are gentle on your skin but show no real results. Other treatments are so abrasive and have so many bad side effects that it is not even worth the risk. But before you give up hope, consider trying a proven product used by dermatologists worldwide: Juvederm. Juvederm gives you younger looking skin instantly and lasts for up to a year, but it is still gentle and safe. Other products claim results, but Juverderm’s clients show them.

Juvederm is an injectable clear, water-based gel containing hyaluronic acid, a type of chemical found naturally in the body. There are no animal components involved in the manufacturing of the drug, so you do not need to worry about allergies. Juvederm increases the elasticity and smoothness of your skin while revitalizing the skin’s cells. It is a natural product that will not give you a “plastic surgery” look!

Using a very fine needle, the gel is injected into the mid to deep dermis layer of your facial tissue to add volume. The injection is performed slowly and only requires a small amount of the product, and then the skin is massage to distribute the gel evenly. In total, the procedure takes around 15 minutes, and you can see instant results.

Juvederm is an FDA-approved drug with a low risk of side effects (less than 1% of people tested showed side effects). You may experience slight redness, pain, itching, or swelling at the injection site. In addition to your face, you can use this product as a filler for wrinkles around your cheeks, forehead, hands, and mouth. The drug is easily available online or through an extensive network of professional providers.

The Juvederm results last up to a year, and the process can be repeated. Why spend money and time on facelifts or microdermabrasion therapies when they can cause you risk and discomfort? Fill out your wrinkles and go back in time to a younger you!

Full lips are unquestionably considered to be attractive and youthful, and one of the leading symbols of sensuality today. Since so many of the world’s top movie stars and models have the full-lipped look more people are starting to seek out ways to get the same plumped up lips. Today there are several different options for cosmetic lip enhancement, both temporary and permanent.

Injectable Fillers For Lip Enhancement

Injectable fillers are the most common method of lip enhancement today. These fillers are made of either bovine collagen or hyaluronic acid. Bovine collagen fillers such as Zyderm and Cosmoderm are injected via a very thin gauge needle into the borders of the lips or the body of the lips. Bovine collagen fillers are capable of filling out the lips immediately and of adding volume to any area of the lips. Bovine collagen fillers generally last for between three and six months. While bovine collagen fillers are extremely effective at adding volume and creating any change in the lips desired, they do have one potential drawback. Patients who have an allergy or sensitivity to bovine collagen cannot use this particular type of injectable filler. Most physicians require that lip enhancement patients undergo a pre-treatment bovine collagen allergy test to make certain that there will not be any problems with the treatment. In cases where the patient demonstrates an allergy to bovine collagen hyaluronic acid fillers are the preferred option.

Hyaluronic acid injectable fillers are used in a very similar way to bovine collagen fillers as they are injected through a long thin needle into any area of the lip that needs added volume or enhancement. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are derived from non-animal sources and very closely mimic the hyaluronic acid that is found naturally in the human body. Fillers that are composed of hyaluronic acid do not require any pre-treatment allergy testing since the product is virtually identical to the collagen builders already in the body. One of the advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they have more longevity than their collagen counterparts: Most hyaluronic acid fillers last from six to twelve months.

Permanent Lip Enhancement Methods

Some patients who are seeking a permanent lip enhancement may choose to use implantable synthetic materials such as Gore-Tex and SoftForm. These materials are soft, pliable, and can be surgically inserted into the lips to provide a permanent increase in volume. These options are more expensive than the injectable fillers but their permanent nature makes them a better long term value for some patients. Some patients may experience side effects from lip implants such as allergic reactions to the implanted material. In some cases migration may occur, meaning the implants will travel outside the area where they were inserted. In such cases surgical removal and repositioning is required.

Hyaluronic acid is the human body’s natural way of providing volume and a fresh faced appearance – in fact there are large quantities of hyaluronic acid present in the skin. However, as the body ages the amount of hyaluronic acid steadily decreases, often leaving behind sagging and wrinkled skin due to the loss of volume. Today hyaluronic acid is being produced in the laboratory for use in the fight against aging. Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are able to plump up the skin in specific areas where volume has been lost. These fillers also have the helpful effect of binding to water molecules in the body, allowing for a long term facial correction.

Since there are now a number of different dermal fillers on the market, selecting the right one can be difficult. Two of the most popularly used hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers are Juvederm and Restylane. Both have specific advantages, and for a patient to make the proper choice it is necessary to carefully compare the two and decide which one is best for their needs.

Overall, Juvederm and Restylane are very similar products. Both are made from hyaluronic acid and are nearly identical in composition. While Juvederm is slightly thicker than Restylane, it is considered by many physicians to be easier to mold and shape into the facial tissue. Both Juvederm and Restylane are injected into the nasolabial folds (the area extending from the edge of the nose to the edge of the lips), the tear troughs underneath the eyes, and the frown lines in the brow area. Both products are also used in the lips as a plumping agent, or for overall lip reshaping.

The primary difference in the products appears to be the texture. Many doctors prefer to use Juvederm in areas such as nasolabial folds or other large areas since it molds into the skin more easily. However, other doctors feel that the two products work equally well even though the texture of Restylane is slightly thinner. In terms of longevity, Juvederm appears to have a slight edge over Restylane. While this effect may vary with each patient, Juvederm is generally considered to be the longer lasting of the two products due to the fact that Juvederm contains about 10 percent more cross-linked hyaluronic acid by volume.

Overall the two products are very similar and in most cases will produce virtually identical results when administered properly by a licensed practitioner. Each patient and doctor may find that they have personal preferences after trying both products, however.

Quick fix dermal filler products include such widely recognized products as Botox, Juvederm, and Restylane. These substances, when properly injected by an experienced clinician, can eliminate obvious signs of aging such as wrinkles, crows’ feet beside the eyes, and forehead creasing.

How Do They Work?

While Botox works beneath the dermal layer to relax those muscles that when contracting, form expressive lines on the face, Juvederm and Restylane work within the skin layer to immediately fill and voluminize the flesh on the face and then provide nutritive revitalization for the longer term. They are especially effective in smoothing areas around the mouth and nose.

Application

Because all three of these dermal fillers require application via injection into facial tissues, they call for the services of a licensed clinician. Only the experienced expert can judge the correct quantity of filler and the proper areas for application. A professional office venue is the safest, most sterile and quality-controlled environment for treatments of this kind.

Industry Concerns

In recent years, especially since sales of Botox, Juvederm and Restylane no longer require a physician’s prescription, more sources are making these dermal fillers available to the general public. People have the option to buy the products directly or online. Incredibly, people are actually giving themselves a do-it-yourself quick facial fix by self-injecting dermal fill substances.

This practice is raising considerable concern among the medical community. Some clinicians point out that medical supplies from unproven sources can easily be counterfeit or substandard products that may cause unwanted side effects. Others focus on the fact that an untrained individual is hardly qualified to judge quantities and injection sites. Amateur applications of Botox, Restylane, or Juvederm can produce some surprising and sometimes alarming results.

Self-injection of dermal fillers can cause redness and infection, excessive swelling, scarring, bleeding, and migration of fillers to undesirable areas of the face. When you inject fillers around your eyes and forehead, you can create droopy eyelids or areas of swelling that a physician may find hard to reverse.

Conclusions

The majority of individuals self-injecting dermal fillers do so to save professional fees. Yet when you consider the potential health problems and side effects that often require a doctor’s intervention later, these do-it-yourselfers rarely save much, and often manage to make themselves look worse rather than better. An initial investment in professional injection of dermal fillers undeniably produces the best results.

The aging process undoubtedly changes our skin in many ways, including reducing the collagen fibers that give our skin the elasticity and tightnessJuvéderm it needs. That’s why medical advancements such as Juvéderm have done so much to improve the nature of our skin while we age, allowing us to rejuvenate and heal skin that’s begun to sag and wrinkle. As we battle against pollution in the area, stress, sunlight and unhealthy lifestyles like smoking, new medical treatments are always available to help us recover our appearance when necessary. The truth is our skin is taking the brunt of the damage in our current lifestyles, taking most of the hits like sun damage and stress-related aging. Our skin is actually aging faster than it should because of the rough life it’s going through.

The reason for the aging appearance associated with wrinkles and drooping skin is low levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Fortunately, a new product works to fix this. Juvéderm Dermal Filler treatments are a non-surgical procedure that gives you affects that can last at least six months, maybe longer. So what is Juvéderm? Basically, it’s a wrinkle removal gel that fills all the fine lines in the skin to give a smooth look that still looks natural and youthful. Juvéderm fulfills our skin’s needs as wel by providing it with acids that plump and soothe the rough texture of aging skin. Juvéderm treatments are available at both medical spas and cosmetic surgeons’ offices, allowing you to choose which setting will make you most comfortable.

Juvéderm Dermal Filler is a safe and painless alternative to surgical procedures, although it does have some side effects in some cases. Special care should always be taken when using Juvéderm and that’s why it’s only available at select spas and cosmetic surgeons. It is not yet known what the effects of Juvéderm are on pregnant women. Juvéderm Dermal Filler is currently approved for the correction of wrinkles on the face and facial folds.

Juvéderm is a simple procedure that takes less than twenty minutes. Gel is injected into affected areas and smoothed by a trained professional. Your next appointment is then scheduled and you’re ready to go. Typically, treatments cost between £200 and £700, which depends on the type of formula you select. Of course, when compared to the cost of cosmetic surgery, this price is definitely worth it. The results of Juvéderm Dermal Fillers are unparalleled and will leave you amazed.

There exist a few kinds of dermal fillers on the market, all of which have the same intention: to decrease the signs of aging. The only realDermal Fillers differences among them are how long they take, what they are made of, and how they work.

Collagen

Collagen is an injection, thus making it a rather soft product. Because it is based on humans, there are hardly ever any negative reactions and it usually sits well with anybody who takes it. The primary advantage is the fact that it has lidocaine in it, meaning the process is less uncomfortable for a person, making it a good choice for those who fear pain. On average, the product will remain good for up to six months, though it must be refrigerated.

Hyaluronic Acids

Restylane and Perlane are two examples of a non-animal based hyaluronic acid Dermal Fillers. The former product will typically last upwards of six months, where the latter product seems to last a little bit longer than that since it is a bit of a more robust product. Captique, another similar product, will normally last upwards of four months. Juvederm, on the other hand, is a new product of its kind that has been proven to last even longer: upwards of twelve months. Like collagen, it is a soft product that injects with ease.

Hylaform is another type of this product, though unlike the others, it is avian based. It is quite similar to Restylane except it does not last quite as long. However, it does come in numerous different levels of concentration for the purposes of property tailoring for a different level of wrinkles.

Semi-Permanent Dermal Fillers

Manufactured by BioForm, Radiesse is a product that of which is greatly compatible with people due to the fact that it contains a natural body substance: calcium hydroxyapatite. Though it may take multiple injections before the desired result is achieved, when this occurs, it should last upwards of two years. The natural body substance functions as a way to increase the production of new collagen. However, included with this advantage is one drawback: It causes a little bit more pain and bruising than that of other methods.

Manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, and equally as compatible as the previous mention, Sculptra comes delivered within a vial. Ideally, one would reconstitute the substance at least three hours prior with lidocaine and sterile water. Since the water is used, the results will not be immediate, though it should occur within two days afterwards. Because the final product contains lidocaine, it will not be quite as painful as other methods, though this is a method requiring future injections at least a full month in between. This may last upwards of two years.
