The word Fillers can conjure up all sorts of preconceived ideas of faces looking not quite right or overdone… so the purpose of this short blog by Dr Dil is to help lessen the fear of filler treatment.

Volume loss is a fundamental component of facial ageing and this happens due a variety of reasons including fat redistribution, skin laxity and skeletal changes in our faces.

As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin diminishes, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. The skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. When we’re born, we have plentiful amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA) in our body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop.

The MD codes were developed and pioneered by the world famous plastic surgeon Dr Mauricio De Maio using the Vycross collection of Juvederm Dermal fillers. The Juvéderm range of fillers contains a variety of products, which can be used to treat different areas, from fine lines on more delicate parts of the face to deep skin depressions.

By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles, dermal fillers can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a fresher look.

The treatment of volume loss with dermal fillers will usually involve injecting this naturally occurring product (HA) through a tiny needle. The discomfort is minimal as the treatment does not take long to perform. The aesthetic outcomes of treatments with dermal filler are seen immediately after the treatment but are at their best at 2-4 weeks.

I always say to my patients that facial enhancement is a journey and treatment plans can always evolve according to needs and budget. In my opinion if your considering dermal filler treatment , most patients will benefit from replacing lost cheek volume.

This not only enhances the mid face, but it also improves the appearances of the “nose to mouth lines” and ” sad lines” and around our eyes…This statement is obviously subject to individual facial assessment and consultation.

MD Codes Guideline – Cosmetic Courses

Using small volumes of dermal fillers strategic sites eg CK1/CK2/CK4 (CK= cheek) we can build the foundation needed for rejuvenation. The use of MD Codes identifies precise

sites in the face where the use of dermal fillers will create natural looking lift and rejuvenation and allows for bespoke, tailor made treatments, which take into account facial proportions and anatomy.

Negatives vectors in the face can be lifted so to change the emotional attributes on a patients face… so we can make the patient look happier, more rested, more youthful and less saggy.

So to conclude dermal fillers are not to be feared..they are a great way to enhance your beauty by replacing volume in a subtle and natural looking way… however choose your injector wisely as good anatomical knowledge is essential.

Chemical Peels are a fantastic treatment and can be personalised for different skin conditions and ages to help get the most out of them. The exfoliating treatment works by removing the dead layers of damaged skin cells on the face leaving a healthy glow behind making the patient feel refreshed and revitalised!

There is a lot of myths which surround Chemical Peels largely summoned by media and entertainment influence. The most popular being the Samantha scene in Sex in the City peel (not true!) and the second that you cant have a chemical skin peel in the Summer.

Cosmetic Courses expert trainer Fleur took time out of her busy schedule to answer the much asked question.

“Can I have a Chemical Peel in the Summer?”

Yes!

The majority of AHA and BHA chemical peels are safe to have all year round as long as you follow a few basic rules:

  • Always use an SPF that is a physical barrier not chemical barrier with the preferred factor of 50 straight after your peel – this gives you the ultimate protection you need. SPF should be used all year round to help prevent harmful UV rays causing photo-ageing. Introduce it into your morning skincare routine as your last step to help protect your face and neck areas.
  • Part of the process of a skin peel is very much, your skin peels! We advise you keep your face out of direct sunlight for a few days as best you can and this is when your skin will be most vulnerable as it has shed its old layer and a new fresh layer is on show.
  • If you have an event coming up and want a peel before hand to help refresh your skin we advise that for a light peel you leave 5 days for optimum results and 10 days for a stronger peel.

Chemical Peels at Cosmetic Courses

At Cosmetic Courses we offer Chemical Peels at the reduced cost of £70 including microdermabasion, which is an approximate discounts of £100 on normal high street prices. This treatment is available at our Buckinghamshire, Birmingham, Nottingham & Leeds clinics.

Before & After of Chemical Peels

It’s the injectable sweeping the world but what do we really know about the winkle buster that is Botulinum Toxin? In this blog we look at the facts & some frequently asked questions to get your knowledge tip top when it comes to one of the worlds most famous toxins.

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Used aesthetically to combat wrinkles Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin protein sourced from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s qualities help to relax muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Over time with extensive research and testing the injectable has proven to be able to also treat certain medical conditions.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum Toxin works by injecting controlled amounts of the product into the areas where you have active muscle movement. In line with our ageing process we gradually form wrinkles overtime. We develop these wrinkles as a result of repetitive active movement of certain muscle groups. The treatment works by relaxing the muscles which helps to prevent them from contracting and in turn slows down the formation of wrinkles and lines.

What is Botox?

Many use the word Botox as the name of the treatment when in fact this is just the name of one brand of Botulinum Toxin. Created by Allergan, Botox® is one of the biggest brands of Botox in the world. It would be the same as calling all vacuum cleaners a hoover… All brands of Botulinum Toxin hold their own qualities and names. Patients should be aware of the pros and cons of each to help them make an informed decision on the products used.

Are Botulinum Toxin injections safe?

Safety is incredibly important when it comes to aesthetic treatments and in order to ensure your safety it’s beneficial to know about the practice of injectables. Understanding more about this will help you to make informed decisions about your treatments.

In order for public use products need to have FDA approval. Each product approved by the FDA has gone through extensive testing in order for it to meet all guidelines and regulations set. Once given the FDA seal of approval the product is safe to use when administered by a professional.

We treat our models with Botox at Cosmetic Courses, the anti-wrinkle injection created by Allergan. The FDA have approved Botox for over 10 years.

Administered by a trained professional this procedure is safe and can achieve great results.

Are Botulinum Toxin injections permanent?

No, these injections are not permanent. On average Botox lasts for around 3 – 4 months post treatment and patients find they often need repeat treatments needed throughout the year. The right practitioner will guide you with your treatment plan to ensure your safety and achieve the best results.

Botulinum Toxin FACTS…

  • First used in the 70’s, the injectable was used to treat the medical condition of Strabismus.
  • Its journey in the cosmetic industry began in the 90’s where its wrinkle relaxing qualities were discovered.
  • Botulinum Toxin is manufactured by many companies but there are three main pharmaceutical companies used in the UK; Allergan, Galderma & Merz.
  • Headaches, excessive sweating and strabismus are some of the medical conditions which can be treated with the injectable.
  • Botulinum Toxin injections are popular with everybody, from women to men “Brotox” to business professionals “Protox“.
  • The number of women in the UK using anti-wrinkle injections has risen by 41% since 2011.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy and Dermaroller are both popular choices when it comes to skin rejuvenation. The remarkable results of the treatments are often seen throughout the beauty world as well as among ‘A listers’. Not only do these treatments create fantastic results on their own but once combined the results from working together are phenomenal. Here we look at each procedure and the benefits of combining the two into your treatment plan.

First things first, lets understand them a bit better…

What is PRP and how does it work?

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy otherwise known as PRP is a natural treatment used to rejuvenate the skin. The results show a fresher, brighter appearance.

The treatment uses the bodies own growth factors to promote healthier younger skin. Using the Cellenis system, blood is drawn and then spun in the centrifuge machine which separates the platelet-poor plasma and platelet-rich plasma.

The clear (good) plasma is re-injected back into the skin which stimulates soft tissue rejuvenation. This wakes up the bodies own repair process which stimulates new elastin and collagen.

Platelet rich plasma therapy is suitable for all skin types and recovery time is little. Due to the nature of the treatment,  no chemicals are used, only the bodies own repair system to promote healthier skin with long lasting results.

What is Dermaroller and how does it work?

Dermaroller therapy is a treatment that stimulates the skin to repair itself safely and naturally. The roller contains clinically proven micro needles which when rolled over the skin cause minimally invasive puncturing and pin point bleeding, The body is then alerted and begins it’s healing process by sending collagen to the surface of the skin to repair the ‘damage’.

This influx of collagen begins to fix certain problems in that area;

  • Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimising acne scarring
  • Refreshing the skin

The benefits of combining

Kim Kardashian is a big fan of the benefits of combing treatments

Both of the treatments work wonders on the skin by using a natural approach to skin rejuvenation. Although they may sound similar they work in different ways to achieve maximum results. Combining both therapies allows them to work hand in hand together to achieve maximum effect.

Both treatments work by controlled wounding of the skin which in turn stimulates collagen, elastin and fibroblast activity. The added growth factors from the PRP then intensify when combined with Dermaroller.

Dermaroller and PRP also carry great benefits when combined with other skin therapies. Making them a great component in your skin care regime.

Patients undergoing these treatments can see results such as:

  • Reduction of fine lines & wrinkles
  • Smoother skin appearance
  • Reduction of scars
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Even skin tones
  • Lightening of hyper-pigmentation & skin tone
  • Pore appearance reduction
  • Glowing, fresher skin
  • Younger complexion

This blog will be your go to guide for understanding your basic from your advanced when it comes to Botox and dermal filler treatments…

Foundation Course (Basic Botox & Filler)foundation botox and dermal filler treatments

The foundation course is the first step our delegates make. They are experts within their medical professions and now they want to turn their hand to aesthetic medicine. As this is their first course in this field we take our time training them. Ensuring they are confident and know exactly what they are doing, this means models may experience slightly longer waiting times.  The great things about our Foundation days are that they are held on weekends across our different locations.

The treatments available are: Upper Face Botox (forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet) & Filler around the Mouth (nasolabial folds, smokers lines, mouth corners & marionette lines)

Advanced Course (Botox & Filler)advanced botox and dermal filler treatments

This course is for our delegates who have completed previous training days, have gained some experience and now want to take their knowledge to the next step. The course covers additional practical areas and introduces new injection techniques when using Botox and filler treatments. Models may find that these courses have a slightly smaller group size and are more likely to have a combination of treatments as the delegates already have aesthetic experience. We tend to hold these courses a couple of times a month within the working week.

The treatments available are: Lower Face Botox (smoker’s lines, downturned mouth, puckered chin, gummy smile, masseter muscle and nefertiti lift) Lip Filler, Hyperhidrosis, Cheek Filler and Brow Lifts.

Becoming a Cosmetic Courses Model

Not only do you receive high quality treatments for a discount of the price. You also join a community of like minded individuals. We encourage our models to be honest with their past procedures so we can make sure we develop the safest and most effective treatment plan.

Mornings are stressful enough, good intentions to wake up early and start the day calm and collected. Replaced by frantic hair brushing, coffee gulping and a room full of clothes left on your departure. When the summer season arrives in the UK another hurdle arrives into our morning routines, “what do I wear today?!”. British weather is famous for its constant change, one day boiling, the next freezing. Finding the right attire in our morning routine seems the impossible. Although there is one thing we can recommend you wear and we know it works… SPF sunscreen.

When Should you Wear Sunscreen?

All the time. A common misconception is that sunscreen should only be worn if you are purposely exposing your body to the sun. For example, many only wear sunscreen while they are on beach holidays. If the same weather was to hit the UK they wouldn’t really think of wearing sunscreen because they are not laying out in it and “it’s the UK”.

The sun can damage your skin anytime, anywhere. Even hidden behind the clouds, its harmful rays can still delve into our precious skin. So the advice is to always apply a minimum of SPF 30 every day when the sun has made its first appearance of the year to it’s last, no matter what continent you are on.

Top dermatologists recommend introducing sunscreen into your morning routine and even keeping the bottle near your toothpaste to give you that gentle reminder. The sun can penetrate through clothing, so although you are “covered up” there is no harm generously applying to all areas of the body.

What Happens if I don’t Wear Sunscreen?

The top concern for those exposing themselves to sun rays without protection, is skin cancer. This is developed from a build up of skin damage from the sun. Studies have recently shown that skin cancer kills more than 2000 Brits a year. Alongside this the Soleve Sunburn Relief carried out research which found that 3 in 5 of us had sunburn within the past 5 years.

Not only are you raising the risk of skin cancer when you don’t splash on the sunscreen. You are also helping your skin age faster. Numerous studies have confirmed that UV rays account for 80% of skin ageing. The results from heavy exposure are; pigmentation, reduced skin elasticity and degradation of skin texture (photoageing).

What are UV Rays?

The rays that come down from the sun are classified into three: UVC, UVA & UVB, collectively known as UV rays.Stratosphere

UVC – the most damaging type of UV radiation. However, it’s completely filtered by the atmosphere and doesn’t reach the earth’s surface, so we don’t have to worry about that one!

UVB – the ray that makes our skin change colour. This one will burn all superficial layers of your skin and play a big role in the risk of developing skin cancer.

UVA – this ray will go all the way to the dermis, the thickest layer of our skin. This breaks through the skin’s surface and damages from within.

Therefore it’s important we wear a suncream that protects UVA and UVB rays.

Our go-to SPF Sunscreen Products…

Heliocare Advanced Gel – SPF 50

This on the top of our favourites list. The oil-free, light beige cream-like gel is easy to apply with it’s light to the touch formula. Due to its ultra-lightweight gel formula it is ideal for oily and acne prone skin types and can be used all over the body.

It provides advanced anti-ageing UV protection combining high technology mineral & nonmineral filters with photobiological protectants, featuring Fernblock, a natural fern extract unique to Heliocare products.

Fernblock has been proven to be a powerful antioxidant and skin protector, it enhances your skin’s ability to fight against UV damage that leads to skin ageing. It is proven to reduce UV skin reactions and also improves skin cell DNA protection and repair as it inhibits the DNA damage linked to development of skin cancers.

NeoStrata: Refine – Sheer Hydration SPF 35

We love NeoStrata products, not only do they provide for all skin types but each product shows fantastic results.

This product contains broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against UVA and UVB fighting photo-aging. It also contains NeoGlucosamine. This is clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of dark spots from ageing and acne for more even tone, and to improve your skin’s texture and firmness. It is a light, oil-free fluid, formulated with Phytotal, a botanical blend that helps control oily skin without irritation.

Why do we love it?

  • A hydrating sun shield that improves the health of normal to oily complexions
  • Reduces the appearance of dark spots
  • Improves skin texture, firmness and tone
  • Broad spectrum UVA / UVB sunscreen
  • Suitable for Oily, Combination and Normal skin types

A few years ago, we would mention the word Botox and people would look in disbelief as if we were muttering a spell.  Aesthetic treatments were seen to treat only the wealthy and famous. We watched as celebrities continued to look effortlessly young, but not once did we consider the treatments ourselves. Fast forward a few years and the words “cosmetic procedures” is on everyone’s lips. So why has it changed?

The Growth of Cosmetic Procedures

A recent report by ASDS (American Society for Dermatologic Surgery) saw that 70% of individuals surveyed are now looking for a cosmetic procedure. The online survey was taken by 7322 individuals all expressing their reasons as to what they thought about the treatments.

So why is it now so popular?

A few reasons that have come to light from recent articles, surveys and reports such as the Nuffield Council on Bioethetics – Cosmetic Procedures: Ethical Issues are the following:

  • Self confidence
  • Celebrity influence
  • Physcological reasons
  • Media
  • Career reasons
  • Low cost
  • “Quick fixes”

Cosmetic procedures are also easy to reach. A quick google in your area and lists can appear of local practitioners all willing to make your vision a reality. A large part of the decision is also from the fact that cosmetic procedures in aesthetics are temporary. Results will last for an average of 3 months with the option to “top up” the treatment to maintain it’s effects.

7 in 10 are Considering a Cosmetic Procedure

Whatever the reason for your decision to consider treatment, you are not alone. Long gone are the days of this hushed topic. People now proudly show off their new features achieved with the power of the needle. Women are no longer swapping knitting patterns but practitioner details.

You are not alone in your consideration to have cosmetic procedures.

Here at Cosmetic Courses we focus on our patients. We teach our delegates how to perform treatments but also how to look after their patients. We guide them through their treatment and help them to make a decision. We work strongly by the belief that only the patient can decide what they want and encourage our delegates to listen and advise.

Top Tips for your Decision…

If you are thinking of getting a cosmetic procedure we ask you to think of the following in order to aid your decision:

  1. Why do I want this?
  2. What do I want to achieve?
  3. Have I researched this treatment?
  4. Am I prepared for the change?

A good practitioner will help you in your decision and will only carry out treatment as they see fit and when you are confident in your decision.

The eyes are very much the focal point of our faces. Any irregularities in this area can quickly make you look tired and aged. Eye creams after eye creams promise to remove dark circles and brighten the eyes with hefty price tags and tiny bottles. Here we look at the non-surgical treatments available to banish those bags that actually work…

Common problems with the eye area:

  • Heavy eyes
  • Hooded eyelids
  • Deep under eye circles
  • Sunken eyes
  • Crow’s feet

The majority of these issues are caused by the thinning of your skin around the eye area due to ageing. The loss in elasticity and volume causes the area to look tired and lose its youthful glow.

Each of these problems can be easily treated with the correct combinations of Botox and dermal fillers. This can reduce the appearance of tired skin and brighten up your eyes, boosting your self-confidence.

Which treatment is right for me?

Heavy Eyes / Hooded Eyelids

You may have noticed that your brow has dropped causing your eyelid to rest heavily on your lash line. This can obstruct your vision and can result in you needing to prop the area up, particularly if you’re applying make-up such as eyeshadow. Many believe the only cure is a surgical blepharoplasty. In some cases this is true however there is a non-surgical option for those of you with minor hooding of the eyelid…

Treatment: Brow Lift

Using Botox injections just above the eyebrow, your eyelid can be stretched out by relaxing the muscles. This minimises their hooded appearance. The treatment takes just 20-30 minutes to complete with results being noticed fully 10-14 days after the procedure. The effects from the Botox will last 12 weeks and after this it can be “topped up” with another appointment.

Deep under eye circles / sunken eyes

The skin around your eyes thins out over time which can cause your eyes to look darker. This sunken appearance is known as ‘bags under your eyes’ and is particularly apparent first thing in the morning. This is a very common problem and is one of the first signs of skin ageing.

Treatment: Tear Trough Rejuvenation

Tear Trough Rejuvenation uses dermal fillers injected just under the eye into the ‘tear trough’. Once the area under the eye has re-gained volume it produces a youthful, brightening effect. Treatment time is 30 minutes and full results can be seen after 10 days. This treatment can be re-administered after 12 weeks.

Treatment: Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

The use of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy otherwise known as PRP or the Vampire face lift can help to banish dark circles. The purpose of the treatment is to regenerate and rejuvenate the skin surface using the bodies own blood. The practitioner will re-inject your ‘platelet-rich-plasma’ into the problem area. This natural process promotes youthful skin under the eyes causing dark circles to lighten.

Patients can see full results from PRP 3-4 weeks after treatment.

Crow’s feet

Crow’s feet are the formation of wrinkles at the side of your eyes, replicating the image of a birds feet (hence the name!)

Crow’s feet normally appear from the movement of smiling. Although we love smiling, we hate that it makes us look older than we are so fortunately there is a very simple treatment to combat them.

non-surgical eye treatments

Treatment: Botox

By using Botox injections, practitioners can relax this area causing the wrinkles to fade and your muscles to relax. This means the next time you smile, laugh or squint the crow’s feet will have magically disappeared! Treatment time is 20-30 minutes, with results being visible after a week and the option to have the treatment again after 12 weeks.

Going under the knife can be scary to say the least. Signing up to have something permanently changed on our bodies is something we need to be 100% sure about. For those who aren’t quite sure whether plastic surgery is the right option but want to achieve results mirroring what they could on the operating table, there are a whole host of non-surgical treatments available.

Surgical procedures are normally identified by patients under going a general anesthetic and due to the invasive nature of these procedures recovery time can be considerable. Of course, surgical procedures will always have their place and not all treatments can be replaced by a non-surgical alternative. However with advances in technology we are starting to see a shift from these traditional surgical approaches to less invasive non-surgical techniques.

It is amazing what can be done with the power of a needle and a correctly trained aesthetic practitioner. In this article we take a look at 3 of the most common alternatives to traditional facial surgery:

  • Non-Surgical Facelift using Dermal Fillers
  • Non-Surgical Nose Reshaping
  • PDO Facial Thread Lifting

Non-Surgical Facelift

The Non-Surgical Facelift works by targeting your mid and lower face. With the use of dermal fillers, this quick treatment, coined the lunchtime facelift re-introduces volume into the cheek and jowl area. This in turn minimises the signs of ageing. This clever technique restores volume and lifts the face, giving excellent results.

This is a perfect treatment if you are wanting to restore that youthful glow perhaps before an event or to simply feel more confident within yourself. This treatment uses the Juvederm Vycross range of dermal fillers meaning results can last up to 18 months.

The best thing about the non-surgical facelift at Cosmetic Courses is that we can create a bespoke treatment plan specifically designed around your expectations. We can vary the treatment from a very subtle lift to a more obvious uplifting effect dependent on your desires.

Cosmetic Courses Cost: £145 per syringe

Surgical Facelift Cost (for comparison): £9,000

Treatment Time: 1 hour

Downtime: Patients can go back to normal day to day activities but are advised to not partake in any strenuous activity.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

We have seen an incredible increase in the demand for the Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty, also known as the Non-Surgical Nose Job.

With a combination of dermal fillers and botulinum toxin, the nose can be contoured and reshaped to soften irregularities. For example if you have either a bump on the bridge of your nose, a flattened or high tip of the nose or even asymmetry then you may be suitable for this treatment.

Although a fantastic and affordable alternative to surgical rhinoplasty, some patients may find that the result they are after can only be achieved through the surgical route, therefore a consultation is normally necessary prior to treatment.

Cosmetic Courses Cost: £200

Surgical Rhinoplasty Cost: £4,500-£7000

Treatment Time: 15 minutes

Downtime: Patients can return back to work the same day, but are advised to stay clear of any strenuous activities.

PDO Thread Lifts

One of the newest treatments on offer here at Cosmetic Courses is the phenomenal PDO facial thread lifting. The results of this amazing treatment mimic a surgical facelift by using dissolvable threads made of Polydioxanone (PDO). These threads are inserted into each side of the face with minimal incisions and then pulled upwards to achieve a tighter and more youthful appearance.

The PDO creates a reaction within the body which awakens our collagen, resulting in tighter and firmer skin.

Cosmetic Courses Cost: £500

Surgical Facelift Cost: £9,000

Treatment Time: 30-60 minutes

Downtime: 2-4 weeks, patients can go back to normal day to day life. There may be slight bruising and care should be taken when handling the face.
