Male and Female Ageing

As technology has advanced, it has become more apparent that in society we are more obsessed with how we look. Mobile phones, iPads and tablets, make capturing the moment even easier with the rise in ‘selfies’ and social media sharing. Within the aesthetic industry, there has also been a shift. Over 90% of procedures performed in the UK in 2015 were non-surgical, and approximately 800,000 of those treatments were for Botox and filler treatments. Many clinics are also reporting that they have seen an increase in the volume of male patients that they are now Image showing Peter Andretreating with in their clinic, showing that it is not just woman that are interested in anti-ageing treatments. This could be due to more male celebrities admitting to having treatments, such as Peter Andre and Shane Warne having a little ‘Brotox’ here and there.

One of the questions that we at Cosmetic Courses have been asked by our delegates over the past few months is; are there any differences between the male and female ageing process?

In essence, the ageing process itself is more or less the same, but it is worth noting that there are significant differences between both sexes anatomy, and care should therefore be taken when carrying out aesthetic treatments to ensure a natural and harmonious look is achieved to suit both sexes.

The areas that we believe need to be treated differently for Males and Females are the following:

  • Forehead
  • Eyebrow
  • Cheek
  • Nose
  • Jawline and chin
  • Peri Oral Area

The Forehead

Picture showing the difference between male and famle supraorbital ridgeThis is one of the most important areas for rejuvenation, but there are noticeable differences between the sexes. Anthropologists use the forehead as an indicator to determine the sex of the skull. It has been observed that a female skull has more of a flat supraorbital ridge, with a smooth convexity up to the hairline, whereas the male skull has a more pronounced supraorbital ridge with some concavity before the forehead becomes flatter towards the hairline. This skeletal structure is what influences the soft tissues and the overall position of the eyebrows.

Eyebrows

The male eyebrow is flat and tends to sit along the supraorbital ridge whereas the female brow arches at a 10 -2- degree angle with a tail that is more superior to the head.

The aim of aesthetic treatments is to restore a more youthful and natural looking appearance. To treat this area for a female it may require forehead re-volumisation and a bit of brow lifting to maintaining that feminine look, but applying the same technique for males, it could result in over feminising, and portray an unnatural. To stay respectful of the male gender, it is advised to not lift above the supraorbital and to only elevate the ptotic brow to ensure the most natural look is achieved.

Cheeks

Male and Female AgeingThis is an area that is extensively covered in female rejuvenation, but it does come with limited descriptions when it comes to males. Females have a rounder and fuller cheek due to having a thicker fat compartment in the medial area compared to the lateral area. In regards to female ageing, a fuller cheek gives a more youthful look, referring back to the triangle of youth – everything is more pert and smoother. Male cheeks tend to be flatter and more angular due to a thinner layer of subcutaneous fat. The technique used to treat this area have slight differences, and the volume of product used needs to vary. To keep the ‘flatter’ cheek look for male patients, product should only be used to replace the volume loss. Females can have slightly more product used, and this can be replaced more often to maintain the fuller cheek look.

Nose

Image showing Naso LabialThere are more subtle differences between the sexes in this area. There are 2 angles that are used to determine the ideal nose shape: Naso-labial Angle and Naso-frontal angle.

Naso Labial is the angle between a line drawn from the lip border to the base of the columella to the nasel tip. This angle is slightly more obtuse and slightly upturned for females, and it’s also necessary to consider your patients cultural and ethnic differences when treating this area.

Image showing the Naso Frontal AngleNaso Frontal is the angle at the radix, the lowest point of the nasal bridge formed by a line running from the radix to the glabella and from the radix along the dorsum of the nose. This position of the radix is important between males and females. Females are normally in line with the lash line whereas males are at the level of the tarsal fold.

Jawline and Chin

Both masculinisation and feminisation techniques can be used within this area. Toxins can be used to narrow down the masseter or curve the chin, and Dermal Fillers can widen the jawline, increase definition or add a sharper gonial angles as well as flatten or enlarge the chin area.  Different cultures and ethnicities have different representations of what they believe is an attractive jawline, so it is useful to be aware of this when treating patients. The Hollywood ideal is a defined as a strong wide jaw for males whereas females have a softer narrower pointier chin.

Perioral Area

Treating this area is a more common request in females rather than males. Male skin within this area is thicker than in females, who tend to suffer more with smokers lines and wrinkling. This area benefits from toxin, filler and skin resurfacing treatments for both sexes. If treating a male patient, we suggest you treat with caution.

Male and Female AgeingWhen treating both the female and male face for any aesthetic treatment, it is important to book them in for a full consultation, to undertake a facial analysis. Within this consultation, grade the upper, mid and lower face in terms of structure, proportion and symmetry. Within our training, we advise that you take photos of all your patients and keep these as a record to show before and after treatment– it also helps to show the patient how far they have come on their treatments with you.

At Cosmetic Courses, we offer an advanced Botox and Dermal Filler training Course which offers more advanced techniques. If you would like to find out more about the course, or have any questions, please call the team on 01844 390110 or email [email protected]

Are you a Dentist thinking about training in aesthetics? Wondering if a Botox course could be for you?

Here on the Cosmetic Courses website, we’ve spoken at length about the life-changing potential of Botox training courses for Dentists.

In previous blogs, we’ve outlined 4 benefits for Dentists training in Botox & fillers, and shared our Top 3 reasons for Dentists to take a Botox training course.

But we’re not sure it’s really us you should be listening to.

Hear from your fellow Dentists

Now of course we’re going to wax lyrical about our Botox courses for Dentists and how they could help you – that’s our job!

But if you really want to find out how your life could change after Botox training, listening to us isn’t enough. You need to hear from people who have walked the path you’re hoping to walk.

So below, we have two Dentists who took their Botox training with us at Cosmetic Courses. Both have gone on to successful careers in the aesthetics field. We have stayed in touch with both, as they have also joined us to become trainers – two clear-cut cases of the “student becoming the teacher”!

See how they’re doing since they trained with us…

Dr Olha Vorodukyhina

olhaDr Olha Vorodukyhina is a qualified Dentist from Ukraine who trained in several aesthetic treatments with us, starting with Botox & fillers. She now runs her own aesthetic clinic, Shine Medical, in Nottingham, offering both aesthetic dentistry and non-surgical skin treatments.

In our interview with Olha, she talks about her working week, her background and what led her to choose aesthetics.

Cosmetic Courses’ trainer Dr Agata Smolen also shares her story, outlining the benefits of Botox training for Dentists.

Qualifying in dentistry in her native Poland in 2009, she went on to train in advanced Botox and fillers with us, as well as pursuing specialist lip filler training.

She now works with our sister company Aurora Skin Clinics in Northampton alongside her work with us.

In her interview, Agata discusses why Dentists make great aestheticians, and tells us what she most enjoys about her work.

Cosmetic Courses: banner showing an introduction to blog what yo need to learn about your patients

So you’ve decided you want to set up in aesthetics, and are busy researching Botox courses. Great choice. But if you really want to be successful in the aesthetics industry, your training is just the start.

To thrive as a Botox practitioner, it’s important to know how your patients and prospective patients feel about treatment. Get inside their minds and understand not only their hopes, but also their concerns – and any barriers that may be holding them back.

After all, if you know what’s stopping them, you’ll know how to reassure them.

There are plenty of misconceptions about Botox, and being able to address them with your patients is vital. Unfortunately, this isn’t usually covered during most Botox courses.

So to give you something to think about, here are 4 of the most persistent concerns, along with some guidelines for what to say to your patients.

> Botox is unsafe

Cosmetic Courses: Photo showing our Botox coursesDespite its popularity and widespread use, some people are still unconvinced about the safety of Botox. They believe that, because it’s a toxin, it has the potential to be harmful when injected.

But as practitioners, we know that Botulinum toxin is extremely safe when administered in the right dose by a qualified medical professional. So stress that to your patients.

You can also tell them that Botox has been safely used for many years in a medical context, to treat migraines, bladder problems, etc, which should help allay their fears.

> I’ll look frozen and odd

Ah, the dreaded ‘frozen face’. It’s a very real fear for some people that their face will be rendered blank and immobile by Botox. They might have seen unflattering pictures of celebrities and be terrified of having the same outcome.

So for those patients, let them know you’ll take a conservative approach. You can always top up at a later date if needed. Stress that you believe in achieving the most natural results rather than the most dramatic – and if that means erring on the side of caution, so be it.

> Botox is indulgent/only for vain/rich/famous people

Like most aesthetic pursuits, the early adopters for Botox were celebrities. But it’s now grown in popularity so much that it’s now the world’s favourite non-surgical treatment.

And as it’s grown in popularity it’s become more affordable and accessible. So the chances are that everyone knows someone, or knows of someone, who’s had it.

So let your patients know that far from being something famous/rich/vain people do, it’s something that at least some of their neighbours, friends and colleagues are likely to have done!

> Botox is scary and painful

Needles and injections can strike terror into the hardest of hearts. And here’s where your powers of reassurance need to be at their best.

Let them know exactly what they’ll feel. A slight pinching sensation that will be over in a matter of seconds. Tell them people often compare it to a mosquito bite, so if they’ve ever had one of those, they’ll know they can deal with it.

Stressing that the treatment doesn’t require anaesthetic should also help reassure them that any discomfort is likely to be minimal.

Nobody’s learning needs are exactly the same. Just as some learn better through listening, watching and reading, and others by doing, so it is with class sizes.

Some people find it stimulating to train in a group of their peers, exchanging ideas and sharing the experience.

Others respond better to intensive focused tuition with no distractions.

But there’s good news if you’re currently looking at Botox training courses. No matter what your preferred learning style, there’s an option for you.

Scheduled Botox training courses

Group Botox training coursesAt Cosmetic Courses, our scheduled Botox courses take place in small groups, usually no more than 5 delegates.

Over the years, we’ve found that 4 or 5 is the ‘sweet spot’ to give you the best possible training.

The courses, both Foundation and Advanced, can also include training in dermal fillers. The two treatments are often used together, so we aim to give a good grounding in both.

What to expect

The day starts with a lecture by one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons. This will cover patient selection, contraindications, injection technique and aftercare.

It’ll be followed by demonstrations of Botox and dermal filler treatments, and an afternoon of hands-on practice.

You’ll work in a small group supervised by one of our expert trainers. There’ll be a variety of models to treat and ample opportunity to ask questions throughout.

The main advantage of this type of training is that it lets you observe a range of people practising the treatments. This can be instructive, as there are often tips you can pick up from your peers.

But there are also advantages to training one-to-one.

One-to-one Botox training courses

One-to-one Botox training coursesOur bespoke Botox training courses are very different. There’s no set course programme, and you decide the schedule.

Most delegates who choose bespoke training opt to learn one-on-one, as it allows for much more interaction with your trainer. However, you can learn in a small group if you prefer.

The session lasts for 4 hours, either morning (9am-1pm) or afternoon (1.30-5.30pm), and you can book for any day of the week that’s convenient for you.

A bespoke course allows you to drill down and learn more, and practise more, of the exact techniques you’re interested in.

Perhaps you’d like to build your confidence and hone your skills in the most popular techniques – upper face Botox and dermal fillers around the mouth?

Or maybe you’d like to develop more specialist skills with advanced injecting techniques like cheek augmentation and lower face Botox?

The choice is yours. Whatever you’d like to focus on, a bespoke course offers intensive targeted practice so you can develop full confidence in your skills.

And finally…

Dr Olha Vorodukhina, Dentist and Cosmetic Courses trainerTo give you an idea of our bespoke training from someone who’s been there, one of our trainers, qualified dentist Dr Olha Vorudukhina, originally came to us for bespoke training. You can read all about her here.

Please note, because of the intensive nature of bespoke training, we’ll usually require you to have completed Foundation level training. Contact us and we’ll be happy to advise.

For more information about our Botox training courses, or any of our programme of aesthetic training, please contact the team on 01844 318317 or email [email protected].

We often receive enquiries asking about particular aspects of our training courses – most commonly our Foundation and Advanced Botox and fillers courses.

With that in mind, we thought it’d be a good idea to answer some of the questions we are often asked here on our blog.

Am I eligible to attend a Botox and fillers course?

Our Botox courses are open to qualified medical professionals, which includes (but is not limited to) Doctors, Dentists, Registered Nurses, Surgeons, Trainee Surgeons, Dermatologists and Opthalmologists. If you belong to another medical profession and would like to check your eligibility, please contact us on 01844 390110 and we’ll be happy to advise.

Do I need to be UK registered to offer Botox treatment in the UK?

Yes. If you’re looking to offer Botox treatments to patients in the United Kingdom, you must have a current active UK registration.

Do I need to bring my own models?

No. We’ve built up a large database of models and will provide an appropriate model for your training needs. However, if you’d prefer to bring your own model, you’re more than welcome to do so. Many delegates choose to bring along a friend or colleague so they can see how their treatment progresses over time. Just let us know when you book your Botox and fillers course and we’ll be happy to accommodate.

What should I wear to my Botox and fillers course?

You should come in what you feel comfortable in. You will be treating real patients, so we’d encourage you to look relatively smart and professional. But the most important thing is that you feel confident and able to focus on what you are learning.

How much hands-on practice will I get?

The Botox and fillers course is practical in nature. After a morning of theory, it’s straight into hands-on practice in the afternoon.  You will mark up your model, choose the treatment you’re going to use and perform the treatment, supervised closely by your trainer. You’ll also watch other people in your group as they treat their models.

If you opt for one of our one-to-one courses, these are completely tailored to you, so you can choose your own balance of theory and practical.

How many people will be in the practical session?

We like to keep the training groups as small and informal as we can. We’ve found that 4 or 5 is the best group size to give you the best possible training.

Will I receive any information on business and marketing?

Running a successful aesthetic business requires more than clinical skills. To help you with the business aspects of practice, we will offer guidance about setting up your website and publicising your business.

We also have other resources to help you on an ongoing basis, including podcasts available to download from iTunes. In these, our Surgical Director Adrian Richards speaks about all aspects of aesthetic marketing with Ron Myers from Consulting Room.

Will I receive any support after completing my Botox and fillers course?

We pride ourselves on our comprehensive ongoing support. If you have any questions at all after completing your training, whether clinical or business related, you are always welcome to contact us for guidance.

With our delegates’ permission, we often answer some of the questions we receive in videos or other training materials so other people can benefit from the advice.

Cosmetic Courses offers aesthetic training in Buckinghamshire, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Essex and Kent. For more information about what to expect from our Botox and fillers course, please contact the team on 01844 390110 or email [email protected].

Since 2002, Cosmetic Courses have helped thousands of Nurses to carve out exciting new careers in aesthetics.

Are you a qualified Nurse looking for more variety in your work? How about boosting your earning potential?

Both are within your grasp. The only thing standing between you and an exciting new lifestyle is one of our Botox courses for Nurses!

This week, we chat to qualified Nurse, passionate aesthetician and Cosmetic Courses trainer Mel Recchia about her move into aesthetics…

Hi Mel, how easy was your decision to move from nursing into aesthetics?

In my case, it wasn’t something I carefully planned. Like all the best things in life, it was quite spontaneous! I’d been a Beauty Therapist before I became a Nurse, so that interest in cosmetic medicine was always there.

I loved working as a Nurse in A&E, but after 9 years I started thinking it was time to expand my horizons. Because of my background in beauty, aesthetics was the natural choice.

What do you enjoy most about aesthetics?

I get a huge amount of satisfaction from making people feel better about themselves. I know some people think aesthetics is superficial or frivolous compared to nursing, and I understand that, but when you improve something that’s making someone unhappy, you’re impacting their life in a way that goes beyond beauty.

So you’re almost a kind of therapist?

Almost, yes! You often find yourself being a kind of confidante to your patients. People trust you, and they share their problems with you. They leave with their self-esteem boosted and a spring in their step. For me that’s the most rewarding part of what we do.

Bit of a cheeky one – do you have any aesthetic treatments yourself?

Of course – it’d be rude not to! I’ve had Botox for about 10 years, and I like to have skin peels and microdermabrasions when I can. I’m also a big fan of skincare products to maintain results, and last year I tried a bit of Sculptra in my mid-face which has been great. I’m also thinking about taking the plunge and getting my upper eyelids done next year!

What would you say to someone thinking about taking one of our Botox courses for nurses?

It really is a route into a new lifestyle. Aesthetics lets you use your medical skills and maintain the patient contact you’re used to, but with more flexibility and freedom.

As a self-employed Aesthetic Nurse, you get to choose how much and when you want to work, and you make your work fit around your life rather than the other way round.

In a nutshell, training in Botox will open the doors to lots of new opportunities – so go for it!

Are you a dentist looking for more from your career? Perhaps you’d like to continue using your practical skills and aesthetic eye, but in a new way – and increasing your income in the process?

At Cosmetic Courses, we’ve spent the last 15 years training dentists in Botox and Dermal Filler techniques. Some were looking to offer aesthetic treatments part-time alongside their existing practice, and others were looking for a complete career change.

If you are a dentist thinking about your next move, read on to find out what aesthetic training could do for you.

The top 3 ways a Botox training course could enhance your career

 1. You can offer Botox treatment as an additional service to your dental patients

Some dentists we train are looking to add Botox and dermal filler treatments around the mouth to their existing portfolio, so they can enhance the dental service they provide. Treatment to add volume to lips, improve nasiolabial folds and reduce marionette lines can be combined with dental treatment to give patients a more dramatic improvement to the entire mouth area. This is probably the ‘easiest win’ as it represents a brand new revenue stream from your existing client base.

 2. You can attract a whole new clientele looking purely for aesthetic treatments

Non-surgical procedures like Botox and dermal fillers can attract new patients who would not have come to your practice for dental treatment alone. These patients may come to you for aesthetic treatment in the first instance, and once they have built up a relationship with you, may also choose you for their dental treatment. Expanding your aesthetic repertoire further to include treatments that complement Botox and fillers, for example Dermaroller and Chemical Peels, will give your patients even more reasons to keep coming back to you.

 3.  You can train up colleagues within your practice to perform the techniques

When you have completed your own Botox training course, you will be able to instruct your fellow dentists in the techniques. Lots of our dental delegates at Cosmetic Courses have gone on to train other dentists and hygienists within their practice in non-surgical treatments.

Having more colleagues trained in the techniques will not only increase your capacity to offer aesthetic treatments at your practice, it’ll give you the flexibility to go off and learn more aesthetic techniques while your colleagues ‘hold the fort’. You’ll also be better placed to respond to patient demand, adjusting the balance of your dental and aesthetic appointments to meet patients’ needs. If more people are looking for aesthetic treatments than dental appointments, you’ll be able to accommodate them – and crucially, have a constant revenue stream.

Several patients seeking Botox treatment at a beauty clinic in Perth, Australia were horrified to discover their treatment had been performed by an unregistered nurse using illegally imported Botox.

The revelation came after an investigation carried out in response to a customer complaint. The relevant state department has advised all patients who visited the clinic (Pastel Skin and Body Care) for Botox treatment to contact a public health nurse for a check-up.

They stressed that Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a prescription-only medicine, and as such must only be administered by a registered medical professional.

Deputy Chief Health Officer of West Australia, Andrew Robertson, confirmed that the patients given illegal Botox injections had bought their anti-wrinkle treatment via internet shopping sites – the biggest in Australia being cudo.com.au and deals.com.au.

Talking about the problem of tracking down all the people affected, he said: “Where possible, West Australia Health is contacting all of the clinic’s clients who have been given injections, but information on some clients is limited”.

Dr Robertson encouraged all patients who had received Botox treatment at the clinic within the last year – and not received a letter or email from the Health Department – to contact the West Australia Public Health Nurse.

He reiterated that anyone having Botox should ensure that their treatment was being carried out at a licensed clinic by a trained health practitioner – this being the best way to avoid the risk of receiving Botox of unknown provenance, and eliminate the chance of cross-infection.

Cosmetic Courses offers a wide range of accredited aesthetic courses, including Botox training, to registered medical professionals from around the world across of six state of the art training clinics, both online and offline.
